Ending on a high note

Thursday, November 2nd, 2006

Well this is going to be my last post for Love Manga for a while.
I’m not disappearing but rather moving in with the good crowd at Mangacast. They’ve kindly offered me board and lodgings, though Ed did insist that I work for it (damn cheek if you ask me).

So that left me pondering what should I write about on my last post here, and well I ‘d thought I’d talk about one title that has been published this year which made an impression or just stood out for me. Boy that was a stupid idea.

Okay so I’m stuck on Dark Horse really. I mean the ultimate title for me from them would have to be the re-release of Crying Freeman, I mean it is a no-brainer for anyone who reads this site. But that was too easy so I moved on to Banya, Eden and Kurosagi Corpse Delivery Service all fantastic books and greatly enjoyed, though something about them just wasn’t standing out enough for me. I tried Del Rey and their titles Basilisk and ES but ran across the same problem.
So instead I’ve decided to talk about a title which though I like (and I only read it yesterday) is actually in a format I really do not like.

Yes it is an anthology and it’s DramaQueen’s RUSH.

Rush 00

Being involved in talking about RUSH for a little while now I was already anticipating that I would like it, but as they say the proof is in the pudding, so with much glee I devoured the copy that arrived for me yesterday.

I loved it, it was every bit as good as i hoped it would be and in some ways better (there are only so many times you can look at a preview on screen before you want to physically hold it in your hands), so that’s basically it, you can skip to the end.

First off I just wanted to quickly talk about the presentation, because I know you’d all just rather hear about the content. RUSH is essentially a DramaQueen book and well that brings with it an automatic level of quality which surpasses many other publishers so I was very happy to see that this level did indeed carry over to their global title too. The cover features a drool worthy duo character piece of artwork from the Master creator Lara Yokoshima and really sets the level of quality right there and then, which doesn’t stop all the way through to the back cover which features Akira Atsushi’s character Adder. It’s a nice little picture which becomes my next focus of interest as it is also repeated in all its full colour glory as the colour insert. Yes even though this is an anthology, DQ have not skimped on those little fancy extras we’ve all come to appreciate in the standard manga books. Alongside that there are pinups, alternate cover pages even a Roulette Factoid page (which I’d love to see more off, just for the sheer geekiness of it!) dotted throughout the anthology which all make for nice touches in my opinion. It’s the little things like this which help it to stand out.
The book itself is really nice to physically hold with good paper stock which helps to capture the inks and tones nicely on the page (just take a quick flick through the opening story Night and Day to get a good view of that) and whilst I don’t want to talk about the artwork or text as a whole it is a brilliant example of the varied talents that live in the global BL scene today. Guess I should probably talk about the stories themselves.

Issue 00 starts with just four stories but they represent such a vast array of story tropes that it is almost guaranteed that there is a story somewhere in RUSH that would intrigue you. The opening title Night and Day by Akira Atsushi about a bet taken up by the dashing Adder to turn the otaku Jin into a social butterfly is delightfully hilarious and promises to just get better in each instalment. The artwork though is a real treat and almost makes the need for the text irrelevant it is just that great to look at.
Which leads nicely into the story Children of Bones by Theresa Zysk, which ironically has the exact opposite effect on me then Night and Day. The story is about the put upon Taxi who gets the kick from his mothers apartment only to find he has to move in with a man, a remarkably gay man. If that wasn’t enough to cause a frown on his face the streets are crawling with soldiers who are less then friendly to his machete carrying appearance.
This is just great and I could read this one all day long, in fact I cannot wait till issue 01 comes out just so I can continue reading what happens it is just that good. Though this is not to say the artwork is any lacking either with some gorgeous action scenes and my favourite character drawing in Luce, great stuff.

Next up is the cover image title Master by Lara Yokoshima which runs at well the longest instalment in the whole of RUSH but is certainly worth it. The story about the doctor Sho who has a most interesting pet at home in Kin is just great and features a real healthy dose of sex for the first chapter, but this is where Lara really shines. In not only does her writing keep up with what she wants to portray but the artwork is quite simply gorgeous and makes the scenes a whole lot of interesting. ^.^

The final story is the joint collaboration between Tina Anderson and Laura ‘Zel’ Carboni in Roulette and is so manly even Carl would be reading this. Hell its a mafia story which already gets my vote, it features characters which could have easily oozed out of any 70’s 80’s film set and it looks and reads so gorgeously. Yes okay I rather liked this title. The artwork and writing is quite different from all the other titles in RUSH but that just helps it to stand out even more and I’m very curious to see how this one progresses through its remaining chapters. Either way you cut it, it is going to look pretty. ^.^

Strangely for me where an anthology is concerned there really isn’t a weak title for me and for a debut issue that is good thing, and you can tell that all those involved have put a lot of love and effort into RUSH and it has paid off. Issue 01 is only going to get better.

But with all things there is a downside, and that is that issue 00 is a web exclusive only (unless you were one of the lucky people that got their copy at Yaoicon), so poodle on over to the DQ Store and nab yourself a copy before they all disappear. Trust me you wont regret it, and if you don’t well that’ll just make Riley angry and we don’t want Riley angry now do we…

Thongs = good

Sorry for the lack of updates this week, its kinda busy at the moment but I shall be back in a few days.

Anyway that’s not going to stop me picking up on this topic which was emailed to me recently, because well it is something that I had hoped that would happen here.

Remember back in July I wrote a post on Del Rey’s edit of volume 02 of Air Gear. Okay, so it wasn’t a major thing really but still it was a cover edit outside the original Japanese release. I wrote back then that I was wondering if it wasn’t time we could allow a little thong through on a cover, it is hardly more sexually explicit then any other type of material you could see just walking down a busy high street. But many people did make pertinent arguments about the fact that a title like this would get shelved amongst many other “safer” titles and really in the end it is just one change to an otherwise good manga so should we just lump it anyway?

Well Tanoshimi (the UK version of Del Rey) it seems has decided that it doesn’t have the same social concerns that the US market faces and is planning their release of volume 02 in all its thongy goodness.

Air Gear Volume 02

From Justine Taylor;

I know that there was some talk about the Del Rey putting stockings on the girl on their edition on your website a few months ago. I’m pleased to say that Tanoshimi has decided to go with the original Japanese artwork. We take the view that we’re a different market to the US, and - although I can’t say that we would never amend artwork - we’ll try to go with the original if we think it’s appropriate, although changing the inside material is always going to be tricky as it comes from Del Rey.

I was fairly staggered by this. I had secretly really hoped that something like this would happen. As I wrote back in July, the UK doesn’t always have the same concerns about material like this and we are exposed to it more frequently through magazine covers and advertising that it seems rather futile to suddenly become shy when it is a manga cover, but I was still a little sceptical considering Tanoshimi, much like Del Rey, is also part of Random House. Thankfully it looks like my fears were unfounded, and if anyone was looking for a reason to support the UK releases then this is it.

This is the real reason why I am so keen to see a UK manga scene take off over here (outside of price too!). Whilst even here in the UK we could not get away with some of the works that Japan releases, there is a certain proclivity towards the material which allows a greater flexibility and understanding; the Air Gear cover is a perfect example of this in action. Could we get to see future titles here in the UK which aren’t edited compared to their US counterparts? I don’t think its unrealistic to suggest so.

Of course, I am curious now. Will Tanoshimi shift more copies of volume 02 then Del Rey? The insides are pretty much identical so it is just the cover image you are buying. Will Tanoshimi see a large export of volume 02’s to the US?
Wouldn’t that be a reversal of the usual trend. ^.~
Can’t say I’m entirely upset with that idea either.

Del Rey MangaNEXT 2006

Monday, October 9th, 2006

A few interesting new licenses were picked up over the weekend at MangaNEXT, so we will start the ball rolling with Del Rey.

Le Chevalier d’Eon
Le Chevalier d’Eon
by Tou Ubukata
Kiriko Yumeji

There was one other potential new license in Kujibiki Unbalance but Dallas could not make any official announcement.

I’d have to say whilst I’m not familiar with Le Chevalier d’Eon (the manga that is…) the author Tou Ubukata is a particular favourite of mine after Pilgrim Jäger.

Colour me interested at least until I see the preview up on Del Rey’s site. ^.^

Coldcut Distribution Top 200 list YTD 2006

Monday, September 25th, 2006

Yes that other distributor which isn’t Diamond releases its Top 200 Graphic Novel sales to date for 2006.

I’ve always liked the Coldcut listings because they have a tendency to reflect a different group of titles that we don’t usually see each month in the Diamond direct market chart.
A quick couple of caveats though in case your wondering why VIZ Media seems to be dominating and Tokyopop is nowhere to be seen, and that is because Tokyopop is greatly tied into Diamond and do not use Coldcut as a partner. Dark Horse also does not use Coldcut hence their lack of appearances.

Anyway, over at Icarus Publishing Simon has carved out all the manga titles, but in case your shy of visiting I’ll reproduce the list here.

81(200) Yu-Gi-Oh Duelist vol.09 VIZ Media

Yes I know that’s a huge long chart. ^.~
Out of the 200 places Manga accounts for a more then decent 81 titles, which when compared to how it fairs in the Diamond direct market is even more impressive (usually manga is about 20-30 titles out of 100 compared with 81 out of 200).

As I mentioned earlier not every publisher deals with Coldcut so the representation is slightly skewed, but still the VIZ Media dominance is undeniable. Only 5 different manga publishers make the list and 4 of them (Be Beautiful 7, Drawn & Quarterly 2, Yaoi Press 1 and Del Rey 1) combine to make an underwhelming 11 titles, leaving the other 70 to VIZ Media.

Series wise it is all Fullmetal Alchemist as the first 7 volumes all make the chart, the next closest being Naruto with 6 volumes and Death Note and Rurouni Kenshin both with 4 volumes each; again not overly surprising all things considered.

Simon though does pick up on the interesting part of Be Beautiful in that its 7 volumes of BL titles are the only representation for CPM Manga. Which just goes to show how far CPM have disappeared from the radar altogether.

And so it starts…

Monday, September 25th, 2006

Well back from holiday and here we go again. ^.^

ICV2 writes what was probably an inevitable article as the Bleach anime hits the Cartoon Network and starts what ICV2 call the Cartoon Network effect on the bookmarket.

Volume 01 of the series reappears in the bookscan top 10 chart at #7, 26 months after its debut back in June 2004 whilst volume 02 is already placed at #20; and in total seven volumes of Bleach were in the top 50. But like we wrote before and as ICV2 picks up on, is Bleach strong enough to have the same effect as Naruto. Naruto’s advantage was that it only had seven volumes for people to catch up on, whereas people dedicated to Bleach have a rather massive investment of 14 volumes.
Personally I think it probably can do well maybe not on the same scale but just one look at Naruto shows that no matter what happens when each volume comes out it just keeps selling better every time. All 11 volumes of Naruto are inside the top 18 and to quote a part of the article;

According to one industry observer, sales of the 11 volumes of Naruto so far in 2006 account for just under 10% of total manga sales for the year.

So maybe the volume count isn’t as big an issue but time will tell over the next coming weeks. One things for sure I suspect were heading for another all VIZ Media top 01 again as Bleach and Naruto fight it out.

Top 50 Manga August 2006

Tuesday, September 19th, 2006

Using a mixture of Comic Book Resources and ICV2 articles, here is the compiled Top 50 Manga chart according to Diamond’s direct market sales in the US.
These are sales from the direct market only, e.g. Local Comic Shops, this chart isn’t the same as the weekly bookscan top ten listing which is complied by Neilsen and reflects sales in bookstores, e.g. Borders, Barnes & Noble.

There are two charts complied, Top 300 comics (i.e. Monthly floppy format) and Top 100 graphic novels (i.e. Trades, Paperbacks, Mangas). Recently there has also been a Top 50 Manga chart which takes the titles that made it into the Top 100 graphic novels and then rounds it out at 50. This is the chart that I publish here on Love Manga.
On to this months, as before the emphasised titles at the beginning are those that were in the Top 100 Graphic Novel chart, in the position column the parenthesis number is where they placed in that chart. Using ICV2’s article I also have the estimated quantities too, but as ICV2 does not run the Top 50 manga chart the numbers only last for those that made the Top 100 Graphic Novel chart.

(The estimates for the Top 50 chart will be added when ICV2 publish theirs!)

Okay before we get started, how the hell did Star Trek manga get all the way up there.

Anyway, not a good month for manga as only 25 titles make the Top 100 chart, not quite the worse but nearly; though there is an even balance between how many titles made the top and bottom parts of the chart. This month chart also sees a reversal of publishers too with only 6 making the list, when this happens its usual at the benefit of Tokyopop and VIZ Media and respectively they get 22 and 18 titles. The remaining 10 titles get divvied up between Dark Horse, Del Rey and Blu Manga with 3 apiece and DC’s CMX takes the remaining 1 with once again Tenjho Tenge proving that censoring hasn’t stopped every single volume appearing in the chart.

We get the first OEL Tokyopop title for a fair few months in Return to Labyrinth at #10(40) which is definitely one of the best placings ever, though should be interesting to see what the quantity column is going to be like if ICV2 post their article. Technically I guess the Star Trek manga might qualify as OEL, but I’m still in shock that it posted so high. ^.^ Also following on the latest trend of looking at Tokyopop’s volume 01 output, of their 22 titles this month 6 are either oneshots or opening volumes which is a fair sized number. Especially when compared to say only 4 volumes 01’s from everyone else.

Dark Horse with its new Samurai Executioner replacement Path of the Assassin places slightly worse then the previous volume but out of the three DH titles its the only one which gets into the Top 100 GN chart which is pretty unusual for them. Del Rey also only gets one title into the top 100 chart with Tsubasa vol.10 which has been doing very well in the bookscan chart over the last 2 weeks as well.
VIZ Media though gets the top spot with none other then Naruto vol.11 which rather surprisingly given its bookstore run is the first time its been at #1 this year, previously volumes have always been stuck at #2 behind the likes of Megatokyo and Fruits Basket. Including Naturo exactly half of VIZ’s titles from the Top 50 are inside the Top 100 GN chart which is only a little behind Tokyopops mammoth effort this month.
