Yaoicon

Saturday, October 21st, 2006

It’s Yaoicon this weekend and already the first reports are slowly trickling in.

Over at Mangacast Ed runs with a pre-con podcast which is well worth a quick listen just to get a taste of all the various panels that are happening over the next 3 days.

Friday night saw the launch party of 801 Media, but not a huge amount of details have so far been forthcoming. You know, those all important questions like Who are they?! ^.^
Anyway, both Jen at YaoiSuki and Ed pick up on their first title announcement with the possibility of another potential title;

The other potential new title is probably going to be coming through from Kawai Touko.

The next update was from the DramaQueen panel where we were treated to three new licenses which appear so far to be vastly more hardcore then anything which has come out from 801 Media at the moment. ^.~ (Missing Road is probably my pick of title out of that lot, even though I remember Angel and Devil as rather funny story wise with some ridiculous threesome and I’m reliably informed that Cage of Thorns is very smutty, so that’ll be two copies then!)
As yet no news on how RUSH wad perceived so I guess we’ll have to wait on Ed for that one. Anyway here are the cover images (the DQ ones!) for their new licenses.

Next up was BeBeautiful, or rather at the same time as DramaQueen, who also announced three licenses. Now to be perfectly honest I’d still be fairly sceptical about this until I actually see them on the shelves, because their track record just isn’t that great for me regardless of their assurances otherwise. Then again these titles are all one-shots so the risk isn’t really that great on us the readers if were tempted to buy them. Much as I hate to see a publisher disappear I hope this at least means a reversal of fortunes for BB, then again these were all annouced at NYCC so really who cares. ^.~

The final panel so far was Blu Manga who in the same vein as everyone else also announced three titles. June Pride is of particular interest consider it is book 6 in a series, as yet I’ve no details on whether they plan to release anymore of the other titles.

Top 50 Manga August 2006

Tuesday, September 19th, 2006

Using a mixture of Comic Book Resources and ICV2 articles, here is the compiled Top 50 Manga chart according to Diamond’s direct market sales in the US.
These are sales from the direct market only, e.g. Local Comic Shops, this chart isn’t the same as the weekly bookscan top ten listing which is complied by Neilsen and reflects sales in bookstores, e.g. Borders, Barnes & Noble.

There are two charts complied, Top 300 comics (i.e. Monthly floppy format) and Top 100 graphic novels (i.e. Trades, Paperbacks, Mangas). Recently there has also been a Top 50 Manga chart which takes the titles that made it into the Top 100 graphic novels and then rounds it out at 50. This is the chart that I publish here on Love Manga.
On to this months, as before the emphasised titles at the beginning are those that were in the Top 100 Graphic Novel chart, in the position column the parenthesis number is where they placed in that chart. Using ICV2’s article I also have the estimated quantities too, but as ICV2 does not run the Top 50 manga chart the numbers only last for those that made the Top 100 Graphic Novel chart.

(The estimates for the Top 50 chart will be added when ICV2 publish theirs!)

Okay before we get started, how the hell did Star Trek manga get all the way up there.

Anyway, not a good month for manga as only 25 titles make the Top 100 chart, not quite the worse but nearly; though there is an even balance between how many titles made the top and bottom parts of the chart. This month chart also sees a reversal of publishers too with only 6 making the list, when this happens its usual at the benefit of Tokyopop and VIZ Media and respectively they get 22 and 18 titles. The remaining 10 titles get divvied up between Dark Horse, Del Rey and Blu Manga with 3 apiece and DC’s CMX takes the remaining 1 with once again Tenjho Tenge proving that censoring hasn’t stopped every single volume appearing in the chart.

We get the first OEL Tokyopop title for a fair few months in Return to Labyrinth at #10(40) which is definitely one of the best placings ever, though should be interesting to see what the quantity column is going to be like if ICV2 post their article. Technically I guess the Star Trek manga might qualify as OEL, but I’m still in shock that it posted so high. ^.^ Also following on the latest trend of looking at Tokyopop’s volume 01 output, of their 22 titles this month 6 are either oneshots or opening volumes which is a fair sized number. Especially when compared to say only 4 volumes 01’s from everyone else.

Dark Horse with its new Samurai Executioner replacement Path of the Assassin places slightly worse then the previous volume but out of the three DH titles its the only one which gets into the Top 100 GN chart which is pretty unusual for them. Del Rey also only gets one title into the top 100 chart with Tsubasa vol.10 which has been doing very well in the bookscan chart over the last 2 weeks as well.
VIZ Media though gets the top spot with none other then Naruto vol.11 which rather surprisingly given its bookstore run is the first time its been at #1 this year, previously volumes have always been stuck at #2 behind the likes of Megatokyo and Fruits Basket. Including Naturo exactly half of VIZ’s titles from the Top 50 are inside the Top 100 GN chart which is only a little behind Tokyopops mammoth effort this month.

Yes we have 52 titles, I’ve added in Antique Bakery and Trigun Maximum from the Top 100 GN chart.

July is up slightly on June’s chart with 28 titles making the Top 100 chart though the vast majority of them are in the lower half. 27 or 28 seems to becoming the standard for Manga in the direct market, with maybe the occasional grand leap into the 30’s; but it certainly has become much more consistent over the last year.

This months chart features a whole raft of publishers, 10 in total, a little inflated from previous months because I’ve made sure to separate out BLU Manga and June Manga, something especially with June Manga I should have done a while ago (I may yet go back and make those changes!). None surprisingly it is VIZ Media which has the majority with 18 titles, half of which are in the Top 100 chart, though to be fair Tokyopop have really picked up this month with a close 14 titles; Dark Horse and June Manga bring up the third and fourth place with 5 and 4 titles respectively.

Whilst June Manga doesn’t quite have a title like Yellow in this months figures 3 out of its 4 titles makes the Top 100 chart making a pretty good representation for Boys’ Love, even BLU Manga gets Black Knight in there too.
The publisher that is the surprise this month is Del Rey. Though they only have 3 titles in the chart this is mightily impressive considering their “odd” relationship with Diamond when it comes to shipping schedules and such like. The fact that one of the titles is Air Gear is not much of a surprise either, though I would have though it would have made the Top 100 chart.

Dark Horse runs out another consistent performance. 6 titles in June and 5 titles now in July and once again they are all inside the Top 100 chart. Berserk and Trigun together try to emulate some of the success that Samurai Executioner loved in the direct market, but for me the fact that Old Boy is at 11 (56) is quite cheering.

Tokyopop grabs the top spot this time around with Fruits Basket and really there is no other competition in this chart that comes even close; and it is a long way before their next title appears. On the plus side they must be happy that out of their 14 titles 5 of them are volume 01’s which is very cheering for the future; though no global manga titles made the chart this month which hasn’t happened for a while now.

Was this it?

Was this the big announcement that Digital Manga Publishing and June Manga asked everyone to Otakon for.

According to ANN and Yaoisuki at the panel by DMP there will be a new Yaoi publisher called 801 Media Inc who will be focusing on “hardcore” yaoi. They are a separate company from DMP but will be managed by the same people. I kind of likened it to the way that Blu Manga works independently of Tokyopop but you know its the same people behind the scenes.

That is it for now the real deal happens at Yaoicon, appropriately enough, which will be in late October.

I have to say I’m not a huge fan of this half announcements as I think they can cause more problems then their worth with people speculating left right and centre over what every little detail means. Though it does at least get people talking before Yaoicon, which I suppose is the whole point anyway. ^.^

There are a few things I wanted to pick up on. The small statement that we have says the company will be focusing on “hardcore” yaoi but doesn’t give any details as to whether that means licensing from say Japan, or are they looking to publisher original material. My hunch is that it will mean licensed works, purely because it fits in well with DMP’s methodology, but also because with the disappearing of Be Beautiful there is the potential to pick up some sideways licenses. Plus we already know they were keen to try and initiate talks with Libre in Japan.

I’m also interested in what their definition of “hardcore” is. I can only assume they mean to try and bring over the BL for the 18+ market (I’m thinking B-Boy Gold here) which I’m sure will probably go down a storm if the oft ask more explicit manga please question is anything to go by.

I guess this is an attempt by DMP to become the one-stop shop for all things BL in translated works. You got the vague implications manga like Antique Bakery published by DMP themselves, then you have the June Manga imprint which very successfully tackles the whole romantic middle ground BL and now we have 801media which is heading for the 18+ BL.
We’ll have to wait till Yaoicon before we see whether it’s a good idea or not.

UPDATE
A small update from Yaoisuki.net who went and emailed DMP about this new venture;

As far as title announcements, 801 Media Inc pretty much has their 2007 release schedule fixed. The titles will be announced at their panel at Yaoi Con 2006. As far as hints…Anything I could tell you would be very cryptic and probably just start more rumors on the internet! *lol*

Who needs facts when you can just start rumours instead. ^.^
