Yaoicon

It’s Yaoicon this weekend and already the first reports are slowly trickling in.

Over at Mangacast Ed runs with a pre-con podcast which is well worth a quick listen just to get a taste of all the various panels that are happening over the next 3 days.

Friday night saw the launch party of 801 Media, but not a huge amount of details have so far been forthcoming. You know, those all important questions like Who are they?! ^.^
Anyway, both Jen at YaoiSuki and Ed pick up on their first title announcement with the possibility of another potential title;

The other potential new title is probably going to be coming through from Kawai Touko.

The next update was from the DramaQueen panel where we were treated to three new licenses which appear so far to be vastly more hardcore then anything which has come out from 801 Media at the moment. ^.~ (Missing Road is probably my pick of title out of that lot, even though I remember Angel and Devil as rather funny story wise with some ridiculous threesome and I’m reliably informed that Cage of Thorns is very smutty, so that’ll be two copies then!)
As yet no news on how RUSH wad perceived so I guess we’ll have to wait on Ed for that one. Anyway here are the cover images (the DQ ones!) for their new licenses.

Next up was BeBeautiful, or rather at the same time as DramaQueen, who also announced three licenses. Now to be perfectly honest I’d still be fairly sceptical about this until I actually see them on the shelves, because their track record just isn’t that great for me regardless of their assurances otherwise. Then again these titles are all one-shots so the risk isn’t really that great on us the readers if were tempted to buy them. Much as I hate to see a publisher disappear I hope this at least means a reversal of fortunes for BB, then again these were all annouced at NYCC so really who cares. ^.~

The final panel so far was Blu Manga who in the same vein as everyone else also announced three titles. June Pride is of particular interest consider it is book 6 in a series, as yet I’ve no details on whether they plan to release anymore of the other titles.

I listened to the opening ceremonies. I need you to give me an excuse I can give to my publisher about why I cannot go in 2007. Get married or something…

  2. ed chavez Says:

Oh David for those who care about licensed titles… Bokura no Unsei. And June Pride is drawn by Ooya Kazumi

Tina… if listening was bad, waiting 28 minutes to experience it was… (check yourself Ed you got a press pass…) like getting married.

But think you could be the guest they give a Devil May Cry pop-up display to next year!

[…] Ed Chavez is roaming the halls at Yaoi-Con; despite recording over the DramaQueen panel, he has managed to get some news bites and promises audio soon. Also, he got a copy of RUSH and recommends that we all do likewise. Meanwhile, David Taylor has cover scans of all the new licenses and lots of juicy commentary as well. […]

Apparently I’m the only one enjoying myself here =P This is light years ahead of my last trip to yaoi con.

That year (…2003 or 4, I think) was full of the worst sorts of yaoi fans– the ones who think anything that isn’t boy on boy is somehow less “meaningful,” the ones who are really snotty and holier-than-thou about their titles, etc. It also cost $40 to get in for *one* day and the dealer’s room was *tiny*.

But this is very open, very casual, and very fun, if you ask me. I just wish I could have been there to watch Be Beautiful be so confused about “why the hell do people hate us? O.o” because that must have just been priceless.

Please don’t read my comments as if to say, Hey Yaoi fans, this con sucks. I’m not saying that at all. Yaoicon has and always will be a ‘fan con’, and for fans of Yaoi/BL, it’s the greatest thing in the world…

I was speaking of things I’ve been privy to in terms of business and behind the scenes that, to me, just sound like biz as usual…and that biz has always turned me off a tad.

And no one hates Be Beautiful, at least no one that isn’t supposed to.

  6. jenparker Says:

Fair enough, just a lot of people *say* they hate Be Beautiful at the moment ;)

Unrelatedly…*jumps up and down* They licensed my title! They licensed my title! Wheeeee!

    Er…I’ve been hoping for a while that someone would license Koi wa Itsumo Arashi no You Ni / Love is Like a Hurricane. :D I made a total ass of myself at the panel jumping around. ^^;;

I made a total ass of myself at the panel jumping around. ^_^ It’s ok, I’m sure you were in good company. One of the greatest things about Yaoicon is, you’re surrounded by other like-minded fans. One never has to worry too much about appearing fangirly.

I think, overall, BLU had the best panel. They had the most to announce and were interesting. In other words, there was zero to snark about behind locked LJs. LOL!

After attending a LOT of cons this year, I’ve noticed that opening and closing ceremonies are almost universally awful (I noticed Ed had the good sense to use work as an excuse to miss the closing ceremonies — I know this because I ducked out early and saw him huddled under his headphones, typing furiously).

The rest of the con was really well organized with panels starting on time, interesting speakers and topics, etc. I was very pleased. And, with my somewhat obsessive love of industry panels, it was exciting to be there when some of my favorite titles were announced! Yay, Ichigenme!

  9. jenparker Says:

I wouldn’t say I was with “like-minded” fans. I have always had some difficulty identifying myself as a “yaoi fangirl” because I am usually *not* the squeeing type. Mind you, I came into yaoi mostly via Harry Potter slash. LOTS of little girls squeeing all over the place.

The only real nitpick I have with the yaoi fangirls is sheer closedmindedness. To the type I’m talking about, a het pairing is somehow by default less “meaningful” or “deep” than a homosexual pairing, and they slash *everything.* I don’t. When I do, it’s because I honestly find the two characters to be interesting to put together in some way. But like, for example, Host Club? LOVE the anime and manga. NOT into any of the slash for it.

…But I guess I shouldn’t complain about closedmindednss, since I hate seeing so many ball-jointed dolls all over the place ._. I find them incredibly unattractive o_O;; (I call them goth barbies. Mostly because Jordan kinda likes ‘em.)

  10. funnypages Says:

Ha! I don’t get the doll thing either. Really don’t get the doll thing.

At one of the panels I asked if there were any sweet-rather-than-hot titles coming out (if you know what I mean). By some of the funny looks I got I started to feel like I was the only one there not solely interested in white hot, smokin’, juicy, plot-what-plot, hubba hubba man-sex. And I know this isn’t true, if only because Ringfinger is as popular as it is. So Jen’s nitpick is valid.

On the other hand, it is nice to have a place where one CAN talk about hubba hubba man-sex and not risk getting arrested…

    I was working?! 0_0
More like making dinner arrangements with a pub. You can possibly figure out which one cause they were not at the ceremonies either (but how many were).

But yeah, umm, that was work related… kinda.
